Kill Flea Beetles Naturally

Get Rid of Flea Beetles and Their Eggs Without Chemical Pesticides Using Our Organic Cedar Oil Insecticide

“Flea beetles” is a generic name applied to the small, jumping beetles that produce a characteristic plant injury known as “shotholing.” Adults chew many small holes that cause leaves to look as if they’ve been damaged by a fine buckshot. Flea beetles vary in color from brown to metallic green, but they share certain characteristics that set them apart from other crop destroying beetles. They are typically smaller than most types of beetles, often shiny, and have large rear legs that allow them to jump like a flea when disturbed.

For centuries, farmers have tried to control flea beetles by breaking up plants that are susceptible to flea beetle damage with plants that flea beetles rarely touch. Different types of flea beetles have unique preferences for certain plants. For example, some flea beetles feed only on potatoes, tomatoes and other members of the nightshade family. Others have a taste for broccoli, cabbage and other cole crops. Since there is much overlapping of tastes, crop rotation and polycultural planting methods can be less effective than they are with other garden pests.

Row covers can be helpful if you have an idea when flea beetle populations might peak. Maintenance is particularly important when using this method because even the smallest tear in your row cover will allow entry. Furthermore, row covers do nothing to kill eggs that have already been laid in the roots of plants you’re trying to protect.

Since flea beetles have a strong preference for tender seedlings, it’s best to soak the soil with a good organic pesticide when plants are young. Flea beetles pass the winter as adults, hidden under leaves, dirt clods or in other protected sites. They typically begin to become active during the first warm days in mid spring, which is all the more reason to begin soil and plant treatment early in the season.

While many essential oils are used against Japanese beetles in organic farming applications, our cedar oil formulation is among the most powerful. Cedar oil is a BASE NOTE. In the world of aroma therapy and perfume making, a top note is defined as the first scent you detect in a perfume blend. The base note is the lingering essence that stays with you long after the top note has faded!

Our Formula Works in Many Ways:

  • Repels a wide variety of insects with an intense cedar aroma
  • Erodes the exoskeleton of insects, contributing to early demise
  • Dissolves eggs on contact, but not by proximity. (Eggs must come in direct contact with the formula, not just the vapors.)
  • Masks the scent trails that many insects use to communicate, coordinate and flourish
  • Discourages new insects from moving into treated territory
